The Legacy of Beechworth & Eldorado Gold

The first gold discoveries in Beechworth occurred in early 1852, setting off a rush to the Ovens District that saw over 8,000 diggers working creeks and gullies within months. The nearby area of Eldorado, originally known as McEvoy’s Track, was soon opened up and became famous for massive alluvial deposits, including some of Victoria’s largest nuggets and one of the deepest mining dredges in the Southern Hemisphere.

By the 1860s, the field had evolved into a significant reef mining district, especially around Beechworth, with hundreds of quartz mines operating on and off through to the early 1900s. The Chiltern–Beechworth–Eldorado corridor became one of the highest gold-producing zones in the state.

✨ Notable Finds & Field Highlights

Beechworth’s early rushes yielded nuggets over 100 ounces, including gold recovered straight from creek gravels and gutters

Eldorado’s Cock’s Eldorado Dredge extracted gold from the flats of Reedy Creek from 1936 to 1954, moving millions of tonnes of gold-bearing material

Alluvial gold was recovered from Nine Mile Creek, Silver Creek, Reedy Creek, Hurdle Flat, and Woolshed Creek

Reef systems near Beechworth, including the Woolshed Reefs, returned up to 2 oz per ton from hand-crushed quartz

Some of the richest gold was found in deep leads and ancient river terraces, many still detectable and legally accessible today
